The Pirates Fight BackIn a move that appears to be a message to the US government, a group of "enthusiasts" are working on a decentralized domain name service. So what does this even mean... I'll start by defining "enthusiast". It means pirate or someone who shares files with peers that infringe on copyright laws.
Microsoft Kinect Not Just for Video GamesMicrosoft just released a new video game device called the Kinect that is capable of detecting body movements and applying them in a video game reality. The Microsoft Kinect is new technology that tracks movements of objects and reconstructs them in a 3D virtual reality. Microsoft's gaming system saw great potential in the video game industry, but it didn't stop there. Philipp Robbel combined an iRobot device and the new Microsoft Kinect controller that can recognize gestures. He calls it the KinectBot. Other users of the Kinect system have been able to use it on computers instead of the XBox 360. Use your imagination to think of potential applications for this system: Controlling robots with your movements of your body just by a three dimensional rendering. Remember the 2002 movie Minority Report with Tom Cruise? The computers were controlled with a gloved hand and gestures to flip screens around. Microsoft is now making this a realiaty. This may be the ground floor of the next generation of technology. Full Article: With Kinect controller, hackers take liberties |
Hacktivist Successfully Attacks WikiLeaksHere is a very interesting article about a hacker with a cause. "The Jester" is a self proclaimed hacker activist that says he (his identity is unknown but based on the article's language, we only have to assume its a him) supports US troops and innocent lives by attacking jihad websites that attempt to recruit and groom jihadists. The Jester's latest target is the highly publicized website WikiLeaks. The website was attacked on Sunday using a denial of service attack. In basic terms, a DoS attack is a flood of traffic to a server that temporarily clogs pipelines - denying service. So "The Jester" is a hacker with a cause and it appears he hasn't been targeted because of the targets he chooses. This begs the question; comic book vigilante? Because The Jester is targeting our enemies, that makes him our friend. The US is in a war on terror and having more talent on our side is almost always a good thing. But what if the US, out of some mistake, makes an enemy out of The Jester? He has the ability to focus his attacks on whatever enemy he chooses. And for now, he's focusing on the right enemy.
