The Pirates Fight Back
In a move that appears to be a message to the US government, a group of "enthusiasts" are working on a decentralized domain name service. So what does this even mean... I'll start by defining "enthusiast". It means pirate or someone who shares files with peers that infringe on copyright laws.
Domain name service, also DNS, is a centralized service that tells computers where domain names are located. For instance, when you type in clearresults.net, your computer doesn't know to find that server so it queries a database. The database retrieves an internet protocol address that points to the clearresults.net server.
The government was able to easily confiscate domain names because it works very closely with the company that controls the centralized domain name service. So the enthusiasts answer for this is to de-centralize the domain name service. The solution they came up with is a small program running on end user computers that will maintain the service information for a domain extension .p2p.
